Los Angeles is the most important locale in the U.S. for movie and television production in the arts and crafts industry. The area has long been a mecca for actors, writers, composers, artists, and other creative types.
The area is plays host to many institutes that study and appreciate film production, such as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the American Film Institute. Various awards are bestowed annually for movie and television production, attracting worldwide viewing audiences.
Although movie production in Los Angeles remains the most important center for the medium, Hollywood has become more international, and faces increasing competition from other American cities and from Canadian locales like Vancouver and Toronto. Countries that can offer much cheaper production costs, such as Romania and Australia are also competitive with Hollywood.
The movie and television industries have assisted in creating the image that denotes Los Angeles across the world. Millions of tourists travel to see Hollywood-related places of interest such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Ethnically, Los Angeles had a vibrant African-American musical community even when it was relatively small. A number of musical artists coalesced around Central Avenue, including great musicians, such as Charles Mingus and Gerald Wilson.
Moving forward to the conclusion of the 1990s the metal band Linkin Park was founded in Agoura, CA, and was named for Lincoln Park in Santa Monica, close to their recording studio.
